What The Papers Say - 9 May

There is plenty of reaction to Everton's spirited performance on Sunday as Frank Lampard's men beat Leicester City 2-1.

The Guardian highlights the incredible travelling support produced by Evertonians, who were at full volume even way beyond the full-time whistle.

Ben Fisher wrote: “Fifteen minutes after the final whistle a bouncing, hazy blue away end resembled something of a pub lock‑in.

"Frank Lampard said he understood the Everton fans’ reluctance to make tracks home after watching their team record a precious victory in the fight for Premier League survival."

There have been several stand-out performers for the Blues in recent weeks in the quest to climb the Premier League table.

One man who has stepped up in the face of adversity - both on and off the pitch - is Vitalii Mykolenko, who netted his first Everton goal - the opener as King Power Stadium - with a superb volley.

The Liverpool Echo discusses the inspirational young Ukrainian defender in Monday's newspaper.

"Quietly, in recent weeks, a new protagonist has grown in stature, his improving performances an underlying factor in Everton's refusal to sink into the Championship without a fight," Joe Thomas wrote.

“Vitalii Mykolenko could not have endured a more difficult arrival on Merseyside. After the invasion of the Ukraine star's homeland no-one could have questioned him had he not played again this season. There is more to life than football.

"He has chosen, valiantly, to carry on and, in doing so, played a crucial role in the club's ongoing battle for safety.

"His bravery and determination had already earned the adoration of Everton supporters. It felt, however, as though he just needed a crowning moment to signal to the world his elevation in status at Goodison Park.”

Finally, another star performer against Leicester City was Jordan Pickford, who made seven saves during the win over the Foxes. The joint-most in a Premier League match when on the winning side for the England international.

His heroics earned him a place in Garth Crooks' Team of the Week for BBC Sport for a second week running.

"For the second consecutive week Jordan Pickford pulled Everton back from the brink of defeat," said Crooks.

"The save from Harvey Barnes was quite incredible and the one-handed stop from Nampalys Mendy was almost identical to the save made by Peter Shilton during the England versus Scotland game when Kenny Dalglish hit a scorcher at Wembley.

"That was regarded as a world class save at the time and provides some indication of the quality of the save by Pickford against Leicester."
