'Awesome Fans Have Made Immeasurable Impact'

Victory at Leicester City was immense in its significance. Utterly enormous.

But after the trials, tribulations and tense, torturous emotions of the past few months Everton fans finally had even more to celebrate.

Relegation rivals Burnley and Leeds United lost…heck, the sun even shone.

And the Evertonians who made their way down to the East Midlands revelled in the sheer reckless joy of it all.

Twenty minutes after the final whistle had sounded in Leicester, they were still packed into the away section, belting out Spirit of the Blues.

“Awesome, simply awesome,” was how Chairman Bill Kenwright described their unrelenting, impassioned backing.

“To sing for 90 minutes and then continue for a full 20 minutes after the game had ended and every Leicester City fan had left the stadium was incredible.

“I stood and watched it all at the end and can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like it.

“It was exciting, moving and humbling. No one wants to see their club in a relegation battle…especially not our club…but Evertonians have set a new benchmark in how fans can play a part in that battle.

“I’ve said consistently for decades that there is no club like ours…and that’s because there are no supporters like ours. If proof was needed it’s been shown in abundance over the last 10 days.

“During that time Evertonians have risen to a new level of devotion – even by their own standards – with an unbelievable non-stop display of support for their club and their team…not only at Goodison but also at Finch Farm…and beyond.”

The travelling Evertonians would probably still be at the King Power now if there wasn’t some serious celebrating to be done.

This hellacious, torturous, dog of a season has had one richly redeeming quality.

The Everton fanbase have reconnected with their players.

The nerve-shredding battle against relegation has seen supporters deliver magnificently.

Evertonians saw their cherished Premier League status threatened and reacted.

Boy, have they acted.

The Chairman added: “Evertonians chose to show the team how much that blue shirt means to them - and in so doing have played an inspirational role in our two victories against Chelsea and today at Leicester. They have been magnificent."

The rousing Goodison Road welcome for the team bus ahead of last weekend’s victory over Chelsea – complete with blue smoke bombs filling the L4 air – have already passed into Everton folklore.

“Late in the day I know ….” tweeted the popular Everton fan account Hans Tours on Friday, enquiring if any Evertonians would be willing to get down to Finch Farm from 2.45pm on Saturday to give the team coach a send-off.

Twenty-four hours later hundreds upon hundreds of supporters brandishing smoke bombs and scarves crammed the narrow country lane in Halewood.

They were sending a message to the players. But the identity of the man at the front of the bus was equally as significant.

Manager Frank Lampard connected with the blue fanbase almost instantly.

And “Super Frankie Lampard” rang around the King Power Stadium almost as often as the Richarlison chant.

Since his appointment he has made bold decisions, stuck up for the Club when it’s been wronged, and showed a passion for Everton which has seen him instantly elevated to an exalted position alongside other cockney Blues like Andy King and Graham Stuart.

He left Halewood fist bumping fans through the coach window.

LAMPARD: 'INCREDIBLE' FANS PUSHED US OVER THE LINE

Boss hails Evertonians and team performance in Leicester win.

Then when the coach arrived at the King Power Stadium there was another warm, enthusiastic welcome.

If it didn’t have quite the intensity of the previous weekend’s welcome that was because most of the fans were already inside the stadium rehearsing their songbook for the 90-or-so minutes ahead.

Those quirky classics Spirit of the Blues, the Goodison Gang and the Pilot-inspired (check out your 1975 Top of the Pops reruns) Vitalii Mykolenko song were roared out with gusto and passion.

And they were rewarded with two goals from unlikely avenues.

Vitalii Mykolenko’s intervention was a flashback.

Even despite its enduring international popularity, the English Premier League relegation battles of 1994 and 1998 probably aren’t discussed all that often over a post-work vodka in Ukraine.

So, there’s every chance Mykolenko has never heard of Barry Horne or Gareth Farrelly.

But he produced a 21st century version.

Baz and Gaz thundered in season-saving specials from outside the penalty area – after showing as much previous goal threat as a Tony Hibbert tribute act.

Mykolenko did exactly the same with one sugar sweet swing of his left foot.

The Everton section of the stadium was ecstatic.

One of Everton’s core values is authenticity.

And the fans’ reaction to this crisis has been authentic.

After Patson Daka did what Chelsea so notably failed to do the previous Sunday by clipping a shot past Jordan Pickford, Mason Holgate showed all the predatory goalpoaching powers of a top-class striker to bury a header after Schmeichel parried Richarlison’s effort.

Then it was over to the Goodison Gang off the pitch … and the England goalkeeper on it.

While Jordan Pickford was inspirational again on the pitch, the travelling hordes were inspirational off it.

There remains much work to be done.

But, in summing up the just what this Club’s special, unique fanbase have achieved over the past two weeks, the Chairman said: “Evertonians have made an immeasurable difference to their team’s performances simply by being what they are…Evertonians.

“That’s the greatest gift they can give…and I know that Frank and the boys and everyone at Goodison and Finch Farm are…and will always be…eternally grateful.”

Those fans will be there again on Wednesday at Watford, and they will be back outside Goodison Park next Sunday.

The Spirit of the Blues is loud and vibrant.
