Dyche On What's Next For Everton

Sean Dyche admitted he allowed his Everton team a small window to relish Wednesday’s Merseyside derby victory - before insisting the success has already been parked, with a vow there is “more to come”.

The Blues produced an impressive battling performance at Goodison Park to down rivals Liverpool in a 2-0 win. Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled to deal with the intensity of Everton’s play in the opening exchanges and the hosts were more than worthy of their 1-0 lead courtesy of Jarrad Branthwaite’s close-range strike in the 27th minute.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed home Everton’s second 13 minutes into the second half, helping the Toffees on their way to a first win over Liverpool at Goodison Park since 2010.

Yet, despite the understandable emotion around the victory, Dyche has been keen to refocus the group with another tough game coming this Saturday back on home soil against in-form Brentford (5.30pm BST).

“We are sticking to task,” explained Dyche. “Whatever comes at us, I am certainly proud of that because we have had some ups and down ourselves. I think the challenge from the outside has been with the points [deduction], that hasn’t been helpful, I think everyone agrees with that.

“We’ve been sticking to task so far, but there is more to come. I said to the players last night, they have got to enjoy that because it means a lot to the fans and this locality - and to me, of course, by the way. But it has to be parked because the next one comes around.

“It [Brentford] is another important game and another chance to play at Goodison and get three points. There is a lot on the next game but they (the players) did have to have a window to enjoy that last night.

“That’s the challenge, and that’s why I nipped it in the bud last night. I said, ‘Enjoy it, enjoy the moment but let’s go and do it again'."

On Saturday’s visitors, who are unbeaten in their past five matches, Dyche added: “They are a decent outfit, Brentford. They had a funny spell themselves but came out of that. Thomas [Frank] is a fella I like, I know him and have spent a bit of time with him. I like what he does and as a person as well.

“They are a good outfit, so I said to the players immediately, well not immediately, I praised them first then said, ‘Right tomorrow we come in and we get on with business'."

Calvert-Lewin’s towering headed effort on Wednesday handed him a third goal from his past four Everton appearances.

The striker was also instrumental in being a key attacking outlet for the Blues, chasing balls into channels, linking play and battling Liverpool’s usually dominant central defenders in the air.

The forward excelled in all departments, a point highlighted by the fact no player won more duels against the visitors than Everton’s No.9 on the night (12).

While Dyche admitted he thought Calvert-Lewin produced an “outstanding” performance, he also revealed the England international had been battling illness coming into the contest.

“I thought he was excellent,” said the Everton manager. “He has had a bit of illness, we are hopeful that will pass. He had it before the game, so we must commend him on that because I thought he was outstanding. His physical performance was outstanding, and he’s still not quite over it, so we will hope that settles down over the next day or two.

“This season he hasn’t been too bad on the injury front, but it just goes to show you when you have had an indifferent couple of years with injuries, it does take time to clear your mind of it, clear your body of it, and to have that total freedom.

"That’s what I and him planned when we shared the idea of getting him to a point where he can just play freely. He has had moments where he has done that, and last night I thought he was outstanding. I said to him afterwards, ‘That’s the kind of form and performance that gets you back around that England thinking'.

“It’s too early yet and I am not making big bold statements, I know Gareth [Southgate] will have players who he thinks are relevant to his group, but certainly with that feeling to his performance and scoring, then he should be recognised where he is as a top centre forward, in my opinion.”
