What The Papers Say - 27 March

Everton's international contingent were in action last night, with three Blues involved in the 2-2 friendly draw between England and Belgium at Wembley.

Jordan Pickford and Amadou Onana started for their respective nations, while Jarrad Branthwaite was an unused substitute.

Belgium struck first on 11 minutes courtesy of Onana's perfectly-placed pass into the path of Youri Tielemans who struck past the England goalkeeper.

During the half-time analysis on Channel 4, Joe Cole applauded Onana for his assist.

"It’s a lovely touch from Onana there," the former England international said.

"This touch here [from Onana], don’t underestimate that, it’s a beautiful weighted pass.”

Over in Dublin, Seamus Coleman produced a Player of the Match performance as the Republic of Ireland were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Switzerland.

The Everton captain spoke to the Irish Examiner after the game and felt his nation were unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet.

"It was frustrating. I think it took us a while to get to grips with the game. Then we got some instructions. We got a bit braver, pressed them a little bit more. And got ourselves a bit more organised," said Coleman.

“I thought we were on top from then on in. I felt we were unlucky not to score. I can’t remember them creating too much bar the free kick (goal). We pinned them back for quite a bit of the game in my opinion. I know I’m just off the pitch. That’s how it felt like. It felt comfortable in the second half. We just need to find a way to score some goals. But it’s been a good week – I have to say. A disappointing result. Never happy to lose. But it’s been a good week.”
