What The Papers Say - 26 September

It was a historic evening for Brian Sorensen's Everton side as they beat Liverpool 3-0 on Sunday evening.

The Liverpool Echo reflects on the Toffees' landmark win at Anfield in the first Merseyside derby to grace the Barclays Women's Super League since 2019.

Megan Finnigan and Jess Park opened the scoring in front of a record crowd for the hosts, and Echo reporter Chris Beesley believe the duo's performances could be a strong foundation to build on, especially with a World Cup for the Lionesses on the horizon next summer.

"Curiously, it was a couple of English players who were not part of Wiegman’s Wembley wonders – Megan Finnigan and Jess Park – who put Everton on their way to their first three points of the season," he wrote.

"The pair’s goals on such a high-profile stage suggest that the well of up-and-coming home-grown talent goes beyond those who tasted international glory this summer, and with a World Cup in Australia and New Zealand on the horizon next summer, there are places up for grabs."

BBC Sport praises Everton's confidence showcased on Sunday as they "stamped their authority" on Merseyside.

"Liverpool came into this game full of confidence after their shock win over defending champions Chelsea on the opening weekend," Emma Sanders wrote.

"But it was the Blues who very quickly stamped their authority on the game, pushing Liverpool back and winning countless headers inside the box.

"Sorensen's side played with plenty of creativity and confidence - a promising sign for a club looking to bounce back from a topsy-turvy past 12 months.

"Dane Sorensen hugged his staff and roared with delight when Bennison's late goal went in to confirm victory for Everton and fans will hope this first victory under him can help to build momentum."

In transfer news, Allan is closing in on a permanent transfer away from Everton.

This comes from multiple reports, with football journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting on Twitter that the Brazilian has completed a medical with UAE side Al Wahda.
