Midfielder Egurrola On Everton's Positivity Ahead Of Chelsea Clash

Damaris Egurrola says Everton’s FA Cup final experience has further strengthened the team’s sense of togetherness, as she outlined the Blues’ positivity ahead of Sunday's WSL clash at champions Chelsea (12pm).

Everton pushed Manchester City to the limit in last weekend’s Wembley showpiece, with Willie Kirk’s side eventually edged out after extra-time.

The Toffees beat Chelsea on their way to the final, coming from behind to see off the west London side 2-1 in a thrilling last-eight tie at Goodison Park.

Midfielder Egurrola revealed the confidence Everton will take from emerging victorious on that occasion, as the Blues aim to extend their unbeaten 2020/21 WSL record with success in the capital on Sunday.

A win would move second-placed Everton six points clear of Chelsea and maintain pressure on league leaders Arsenal.

“We beat Chelsea at Goodison and that day was very special,” Egurrola told evertonfc.com.

“I think it will be another very hard game. They have really good players, but we have good players, too.

“In general, we have been playing very well and are in a good way.

“We have to be good in possession and also when we do not have the ball.

“We want to press them well and go for the match.

“After the FA Cup final, the first feeling was really sad because we were really close to winning that trophy.

“But I think we now have to be proud in what we did.

“The experience of the whole week will help us as a team to grow.

“It was amazing time for all of us. I think it is going to help us to play against Chelsea this weekend and go for everything this season.”

Egurrola joined Everton from Spanish top-flight side Athletic Bilbao during the summer transfer window.

The midfielder has made an immediate impact – helping the Blues dictate the tempo of matches with her accurate, intelligent passing, while also impressively adapting to the high-octane nature of English football.

Spain international Egurrola has started each of Everton’s past three WSL matches as well last Sunday’s FA Cup final, where she was one of the Toffees’ standout performers.

“Coming from Spain, I had gone four or five months without playing [due to the coronavirus outbreak] and I thought it was going to be quite tough to get into the team at Everton,” said Egurrola, who only turned 21 in August.

“But once I got here, I just worked hard every day, adapting my game to my teammates.

“And in every training session, I try to learn from the other players and the coaches, so I can try to improve myself and the team.

“I really appreciate the confidence that Club has given me from the first moment.

“From the first second I joined Everton, everything was easy for me.

“I really enjoyed training and being with my teammates, and I like the city of Liverpool, too.

“Because of COVID, I cannot go out so much but I am looking forward to discovering more about the city.”
