Ancelotti Reveals How He's Helped 'Fantastic' Everton Forwards Flourish

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed his efforts to shape a gameplan that brings the best out of Everton’s “fantastic strikers”.

The Blues beat Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 on Saturday to secure a third win in four Premier League matches since Ancelotti’s appointment.

Richarlison struck the only goal of the game – the Brazilian skilfully working space for a shot before curling a precision effort into the bottom corner.

He also scored in Everton’s previous top-flight game, a 2-1 defeat at champions Manchester City, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin has netted three times since Ancelotti’s arrival.

The pair provided a constant goalscoring threat against Brighton, as Everton regularly fed the ball to the in-form duo in dangerous positions. Combined, Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison were responsible for nine of the Blues' 14 efforts on goal during the match.

Ancelotti detailed how playing to the attackers' strengths was a key element of Everton’s strategy.

“I think you have to use the characteristics of your players,” he said.

“In attack we have a fantastic header of the ball in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is quick. We also have a fantastic striker in Richarlison. He has skill, power and pace.

"And, we have to wait for him to adapt, but Moise Kean is another very good striker.

“The fact that sometimes we can use the counter-attack is really important, to give them opportunity to show their qualities.

“We would like to play football from the back, too. I think it is necessary to have control of the game.”

Ancelotti made three changes to his side for Saturday’s game, with Michael Keane, Bernard and Tom Davies named in the starting line-up.

The Everton boss explained his strong belief the players who stepped into the team would perform, and praised his squad’s collective quality and application on the training pitches at USM Finch Farm.

“In training I saw players like Michael Keane, who didn’t have a lot of opportunities in the last games, give me total confidence to put him in,” said Ancelotti.

“The three central defenders [Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate] gave to me the same confidence.

“Tom Davies and Bernard [gave me this confidence], too.

“For me, it is important not to just have 11 players. I want to have all the players involved.”

The win against Brighton means Everton have taken 14 points from the past 21 available in the Premier League.

Next up for the Blues is a clash at West Ham United on Saturday before Newcastle United visit Goodison Park three days later.

“The victory is really important for the team,” Ancelotti added.

“For 60 minutes we played well, we didn’t have problems at the back, the second part of the second half was more difficult.

“But the most important part of the day was the result. It helps the team to have more confidence.”
