Ferguson Ready For Goodison 'Bear Pit' In Cup Clash

Duncan Ferguson is promising Everton will be raring to go when Leicester City visit a sold-out Goodison Park "bear pit" for Wednesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final clash.

Caretaker manager Ferguson oversaw his injury-hit side’s 1-1 Premier League draw at Manchester United on Sunday – eight days after inspiring Everton’s 3-1 victory over Chelsea.

Ferguson’s first game at the helm was contested to the backdrop of a fervent Goodison and the Scot is anticipating a similar wave of home support against Leicester.

Equally, he is optimistic the bounce generated from Everton’s past two matches will feed into another energetic performance as the Blues target only a third League Cup semi-final in 32 years.

“It is a quick turnover but when you get a few results, everybody is happy and looking forward to the next match and that’s what the players are prepared for – to go again on Wednesday,” Ferguson told evertontv.

“For the supporters to turn up again, it was never in doubt to be honest with you.

“They love their club, don’t they?

“After the Chelsea result and that atmosphere at the ground, which was incredible, I’m sure they’ll want to go again on Wednesday and for us all to pull together again.

HOLGATE'S CHRISTMAS VISIT TO CLAIRE HOUSE LIVERPOOL

Defender heaps praise on staff and families as he visits new facility in West Derby.

“We need them and I am sure they will deliver.

“Leicester are a great team, very strong in the transition, and they’re going to be a really tough test.

“They’re undefeated in 10 games, so it’s going to be a big ask.

"But we’re at Goodison, we’re at the fortress, and we need to make it a bear pit.”

Ferguson was without a host of stricken players as Everton claimed their Old Trafford point at the weekend.

He employed defender Mason Holgate in the centre of midfield and was forced into a first-half change when Lucas Digne succumbed to a groin problem and made way for Leighton Baines.

EVERTON STARS ENJOY JUNIOR BLUES CHRISTMAS PARTY

Watch the fun from USM Finch Farm.

Everton were 13 minutes from claiming all three points but efficiently battened down the hatches after Mason Greenwood's equaliser to ensure they didn’t finish empty handed following a tireless collective effort.

Ferguson, then, has been mindful of his players’ workload when devising training plans over the past week.

“You don’t get too much time on the training ground because there are so many games and we have to get players recovered,” said Ferguson.

“They’ve been sharp, intense sessions and I think the players are responding. Results help, don’t they?

“It is about confidence and we’ve got the results over the past couple of games.

“You’ve got to work hard, every Everton team has to work hard, and they’re doing that. It’s my job to make sure they keep on doing that.”

Englishman Holgate switched into midfield at United after Gylfi Sigurdsson fell ill.

And Ferguson insisted the 22-year-old's star turn epitomised the selfless spirit coursing through his squad.

“Mason is maturing into a real leader, a real go-to guy for the players in the changing room," added Ferguson.

"He was unbelievable, going into midfield for the first time in his [senior] career, at Old Trafford, but he took to it and did an incredible job. I’m very proud of him.

“[I’m seeing that spirit from] every one of them. To a man they have been fantastic.”
