What The Papers Say - 5 September

The Liverpool Echo analyses Saturday's Merseyside derby and, in particular, Nathan Patterson's impressive performance.

The young Scot is used to fierce local derbies from his time in Glasgow and last weekend was no different.

"Welcome to the Merseyside Derby, Nathan Patterson. It looks like you're right at home in this sort of fixture," wrote reporter Adam Jones.

"The right-back has been in fantastic form for Everton this season but this was a real test for him up against Luis Diaz. And he made sure the Liverpool winger knew exactly what match he was in for early doors.

"That was a battle which would prove to be intriguing over the course of the 90 minutes, and one the defender won."

Former Everton striker Andy Gray admitted he was fearful ahead of Saturday's encounter but was left impressed by how Frank Lampard's side stepped up to the challenge.

Speaking on BeIN Sports, he said: “That was a much better performance.

“I was worried before it because if the real Liverpool turned up, we might be in trouble but that was a much better performance.

“I felt comfortable in the game, I didn’t feel anxious, I felt we could score a few times and I felt we could concede a few times as well.

“He can take an awful lot from the game and drive into the next few games, certainly before the break."

Finally, Everton manager Lampard has provided an update on the fitness of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The England international is yet to feature this season after sustaining a knee injury, but the Blues boss is confident he will be in contention in the coming weeks.

Quoted in the Echo, Lampard said: "Dominic is training next week, we hope the middle of next week and then we have good options up front at number nine, with Dominic flying? And Neil Maupay?

"Obviously Dominic is a big player for us here. I haven’t experienced him as much as I want since I’ve been here, but obviously I experienced one of the best days of my life when he headed that ball in last season, we understand what he can bring to the team.

"If we get him fit and firing, then our forward options look at lot stronger - naturally so because he is an England striker."
