Mina Scores In Shootout As Colombia Make Copa America Last Four

Yerry Mina stepped up to score from the spot as Colombia beat Uruguay in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure a place in the Copa America semi-finals.

The last-eight tie in Brasilia finished goalless after 90 minutes, with Everton defender Mina producing an accomplished performance to help his nation record a third clean sheet of the tournament.

With no extra-time in this year’s edition of the Copa America, the match went straight to penalties – and towering centre-back Mina fired in Colombia’s third spot-kick as his nation won the decisive shootout 4-2.

Colombia will take on Argentina in Tuesday’s semi-final encounter. Mina could potentially face Everton teammate Richarlison in the final, with the attacker’s Brazil side set to lock horns with Peru in the other last-four clash.

In a game of few chances against Uruguay, Mina made a vital intervention on 42 minutes to keep the scores level.

Edinson Cavani looked primed to tap in from Federico Valverde’s drilled low cross but Mina made a superb interception at full stretch to prevent the ball reaching the Manchester United man.

Colombia striker Duvan Zapata had the best opportunity to settle the game in regulation time but his close-range header on 73 minutes was well saved by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Colombia stopper David Ospina proved to be his country’s hero in the shootout, saving penalties from Jose Maria Gimenez and Matias Vina to spark joyous celebrations among his teammates and staff.
