What The Papers Say – 18 June

An interview with Everton assistant manager Davide Ancelotti features in Thursday’s Daily Mail.

Ancelotti recalls growing up surrounded by first-rate footballers – Fabio Cannavaro, Zinedine Zidane, Alessandro del Piero and Paolo Maldini, among them – while dad Carlo managed Parma, Juventus and AC Milan.

Davide outlines his own career path, working beside Carlo at Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli and now Everton, and reveals he routinely engages in frank conversations with his supremely successful father.

“The assistant manager is there to create doubts on the manager,” said Davide Ancelotti.

“I have a lot of advantages here because our relationship is so close. I can say everything to him if we do not agree.

“I've had great experiences but there is always time to improve.”

Also in the Mail, it is claimed Bournemouth attacker Ryan Fraser is eyeing a switch to Goodison Park.

Scotland international Fraser, 26, has rejected the opportunity to extend his Bournemouth stay beyond the end of his contract on 30 June and, according to the Mail, is “hoping to land a summer move to Everton”.

Fraser joined Bournemouth from Aberdeen in January 2013 and helped the club climb from League One to the Premier League, scoring 24 goals and providing 33 assists in 208 games for Eddie Howe’s team.

Additionally, the Mail intimates 16-year-old goalkeeper Dan Rose has declined a three-year scholarship contract with Everton and will join Schalke to become the Bundesliga club’s first English youth player.

The Guardian says Everton have “registered a firm interest” in South Korean centre-half Kim Min-jae.

Kim plays in China for Beijing Guoan who are thought to be prepared to sell the 23-year-old for £13.5m.

Capped 30 times by his country, Kim moved to China in January 2019 after twice winning the title in his home country with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

Watford and Southampton are also credited with an interest in Kim, who is said to have admirers at RB Leipzig, Porto, Lazio and PSV Eindhoven.

La Gazzetta dello Sport raises the prospect of Everton swooping for Roma striker Patrik Schick.

The 24-year-old joined Roma from Serie A rivals Sampdoria in summer 2017 but is enjoying a formidable campaign on loan in Germany with RB Leipzig.

Schick has netted 10 times and helped the club reach the Champions League quarter-finals but Leipzig cannot meet Roma’s asking price to sign the player permanently.

Italian publication Gazzetta reckons Everton’s interest is dependent on Moise Kean exiting Goodison – but suggests the Blues are ready to join Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in bidding for Schick, with Roma after €26m for the Czech forward.

Le10Sport in France continues to speculate over the potential for players to cross the Channel for Everton.

The publication adds to its claim Everton are continuing to pursue a deal for centre-half Thiago Silva – who is believed to be willing to accept a pay-cut to seal a free transfer move to England – with the suggestion Everton manager Ancelotti is keen on Paris Saint-Germain left-back Layvin Kurzawa.

The five-year deal signed by Kurzawa when he moved from Monaco to Paris will expire this summer, leaving the 27-year-old free to join another club.

The Sporting Director of Dutch Eredivisie club Heerenveen has told Teller Report in his homeland it would be “fantastic” to agree a deal for Maarten Stekelenburg.

Goalkeeper Stekelenburg’s current Everton deal runs out this summer and Gerry Hamstra said: “When such opportunities come along, that would of course be fantastic, but you also have to be real looking at the budget.”
