Everton And Liverpool Legends Unite In Memory Of Gary Speed

Everton and Liverpool legends have joined forces for a project in memory of Gary Speed that praises NHS staff and is raising funds for a mental health charity in Merseyside.

The former players have all contributed to a special song written by Evertonian actor and songwriter Sam Kane.

Money raised from the project will go to Compass Counselling in memory of former Everton and Wales midfielder Gary Speed, who took his own life in 2011.

The song features Toffees greats Joe Royle, Graham Stuart, Kevin Sheedy, Peter Reid, Dave Watson, Kevin Campbell, Kevin Ratcliffe and Barry Horne, and starts with a message from Gary's parents, Carol and Roger.

Comedian John Martin is the driving force behind the project.

“Sam Kane and his wife Linda Lusardi suffered terribly with the coronavirus,” he said. “Sam wrote a song about the NHS who had looked after him so well and we turned it into a football theme.

“We put a football tune to it and changed some of the words and I got some Everton and Liverpool legends to sing a line each of the song. It turned out fantastic. I was very good friends with Gary Speed and we don’t know how lockdown is affecting people’s mental health.”

Compass Counselling is a charity that provides a vital service to local people, helping those suffering from depression, anxiety, depression, stress and other issues.
