Theo Walcott Talks Film, Music And Playing Alongside His Hero

For an article that appeared in the Everton matchday programme earlier this season, we put a range of fans' questions to Theo Walcott.

Learn more about the speedy winger as he reveals his toughest opponent, favourite film and the musical artists that remind him of his childhood...

Favourite city?

The most memorable place I’ve ever been to would be Florence. I got married there. There was a great vibe in the city, the weather was great. And, of course, the wedding was amazing – sharing that day with family and friends was very special.

Best mate in football?

Michael [Keane] and Andre [Gomes]. Michael and I play golf together when we can and Andre and I get on really well. Him and his partner and myself and my wife socialise together.

Funniest person you’ve met in football?

Emmanuel Eboue. He’s always very upbeat and is a good guy to be around. You put him and Alex Song together – and maybe with Emmanuel Adebayor, too – and there will definitely be a lot of banter flying around!

Favourite TV programme?

Power. I stay up to date on that. It’s a great show.

Toughest player you’ve faced?

Patrice Evra. It was always a good battle against him. Going forward and defensively, he was one of the strongest. There would be times when he would be on top and then I’d be on top. It would to and fro during games. I think Evra and Ashley Cole were two of the best full-backs of their generation.

Favourite film?

I’ll go with Enemy of the State, with Will Smith. It’s quite an old one but it’s a great film.

First single bought?

It was So Sick by Neo, I loved that tune when I was younger. My first album was 8701 by Usher.

Song that reminds you of growing up?

It’s more the artists I remember rather than individual songs. I listened to a lot of Usher, Ja-Rule, Ashanti, J-Lo… that R&B type of vibe. If I had to pick one, it would be Always On Time by Ja Rule and Ashanti. It reminds me of my days at school.

Food you love?

My wife’s lasagne. It’s the best.

Food you hate?

I’m not too fussy – there’s nothing I don’t like!

Football hero?

I’d have to say Thierry Henry. It was amazing to then get to play with him at Arsenal. Just to watch him train every day and see the things he could do with a ball at his feet was fantastic. As well as being a brilliant player, he’s a really good guy, too.

What gets on your nerves?

People who go on their phones while driving. I just think, ‘Can you not wait until you park somewhere or get home?’. That really annoys me.

Hardest shot in training?

Probably Lucas [Digne]. He loves to shoot from anywhere at times! You can see the power he has from the great goals he has scored for us.

Best present you’ve received?

For my 30th birthday last year, I had a lot of surprises on the day. A lot of my friends and family celebrated it with me. We did an escape room, which was fun. We were all one big team and we got out, thankfully!
