Evertonians Urged To Participate In Stadium Public Consultation

Everton Fans' Forum member Nick Mernock says it is vital that fans air their opinions on a proposed stadium move by participating in the ongoing People’s Project public consultation.

Everton revealed designs for a state-of-the-art new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock last week.

The 52,000-capacity arena represents the centrepiece of The People’s Project, which also features a community-led Goodison Park legacy initiative and is expected to aid the growth of the Club’s award-winning charity, Everton in the Community.

“I would encourage people to come out and visit the roadshow… add your voice and put in your comments,” Mernock told evertontv.

“There is so much for fans to comment on above and beyond going to a football ground.

“There is a lot of work in the background, so much consultation into the planning and all the other elements which contribute to getting the final sign off.

“Make sure you are there supporting the Club to ensure there are no slip ups in relation to planning and that this project becomes a reality in the timeframe we expect.”

More than 20,000 people participated in a first-stage People’s Project public consultation last November, with the scheme backed in overwhelming numbers.

The Goodison legacy proposal received 95 per cent approval, while 94 per cent voiced support for a new arena at Bramley-Moore Dock.

Feedback from the second consultation, which runs until 25 August and is scheduled to visit 12 locations across all six city region boroughs, will form a key part of the Club’s final submission for planning applications for both Bramley-Moore Dock and Goodison Park.

Everton want to be in their new stadium in time for the 2023/24 campaign.

It is expected to create 15,000 jobs and trigger a £1billion boost to the economy. The venue would attract 1.4m visitors to the city and generate approximately £34m of income for local families.

Constructed on semi-derelict dockland in the north of the city, it would regenerate one of the UK’s most deprived areas.

“I am close to 60 and have lived in the city all my life,” said Mernock.

“I have seen Liverpool go through numerous things and this end of the water has laid bare for a considerable period of time.

“To see the regeneration and the housing and the way it will link the city centre to further afield is absolutely brilliant.

“Everton should be proud of their part in that [creating wider community benefits].

“There has been a commitment to make the project right for the city of Liverpool.

“It is the right move for us to make and it is going to be a tremendous project.”

Mernock first watched Everton at Goodison Park in September 1968.

And he says the Club’s commitment to ensuring a legacy at their 127-year-old home is “spot on”.

A fast-growing Goodison campus already features Everton Free School, The People’s Hub and its most recent addition, The Blue Base, opened officially by manager Marco Silva last year.

Chief Executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale is spearheading a scheme which will create new housing and strive to improve health and wellbeing in L4.

Plans include the centre circle at Goodison forming the middle of a large and accessible green space.

“The Goodison legacy proposal is absolutely right,” added Mernock.

“I have heard Denise speak about it a couple of times and been impressed but to see the plans with some real definitive suggestions… they are perfect.

“It is the right thing to do and will add to what the Club has built in the area. It will enable even more support for the community.

“When you see the full plans, including the element of retaining Goodison’s centre circle  they are everything people want to see.”
