Finnigan Becomes Her Game Too Advocate

Megan Finnigan has committed her support to Her Game Too, a campaign that champions women in sport and tackles sexist abuse, by becoming an official player advocate.

Finnigan, who was named Everton Women captain earlier this week, joins men’s team skipper Seamus Coleman in backing the initiative.

Everton became the first Premier League club to formally partner with Her Game Too, which is run voluntarily by fans of football clubs across the UK, in December 2021.

Then, in March 2023, Coleman and then Everton Women defender Gabby George announced their advocacy of the campaign by hosting a special event with local schoolchildren at Finch Farm, becoming the first Premier League and Barclays Women’s Super League player advocates.

Following George’s departure in the summer transfer window and ahead of the 2023/24 BWSL season getting under way, Finnigan, who has a long affinity with the Toffees having joined at the age of nine, has now taken on the role.

Explaining why she wanted to become a player advocate, a commitment which will see her work closely with Coleman to champion Her Game Too and women in sport, Finnigan explained: “I’ve always followed the work of Her Game Too with great admiration.

“The narrative around the women’s game has started to change for the better in recent years, partly due to the work of Her Game Too but also because of the success of the Lionesses and continued growth of the Barclays Women’s Super League. However, we all know there’s still a way to go.

“I’m looking forward to driving further discussion and education regarding sexism within football and wider society. To do so alongside Seamus and on behalf of everybody connected with Everton is a great honour.”

Sam McPartland, Everton’s Her Game Too Ambassador, who played a key role in the launch of the player advocate initiative, added: “It’s great to see Meg become Everton’s official women’s team advocate of Her Game Too

“Since the launch of the initiative in March I’ve seen the impact that Seamus and Gabby, with their profiles in the local area and wider footballing landscape, have had, and look forward to working with Meg going forwards.

“Her Game Too continues to grow and we remain committed to ensuring that football is a game for everybody. Player advocates play a key role in helping us to achieve this aim.”
