Branch Selects His Everton/Wolves Six-A-Side Team

For the next instalment of a new feature in the Official Matchday Programme, asked former striker Michael Branch, who played for both Everton and Saturday's opponents, Wolves, to choose a combined six-a-side team made up of three players he played with from each side.

Branch came through the Everton Academy, recording 42 Blues appearances between 1995 and 2000. He then made a loan move to Wolves, before signing permanently for the Midlands club in 2000, where he made played until 2003.

Neville Southall - Everton

MB: "I’d have to go with Nev. I think he’s one of the best goalkeepers ever – definitely Everton’s best. From day one when I was there, he always looked after me because I was a young kid. He was always professional, and he was just brilliant, even in training. He trained like he played, and he was just amazing. I always wanted him on my team so I wouldn’t have to score past him!"

Joleon Lescott - Wolves

MB: "Another player who played for both. He had just broken into the Wolves team when I was there, so he was only a youngster. He used to ask me to stay behind after every training session and do one-on-ones with him to improve his defending. His work ethic was great, and he wanted to learn. Such a nice lad off the field, too. He went on to be really good with England and, obviously, the Blues as well."

Kevin Muscat - Wolves

MB: "This one might be a bit controversial to some but I’m sure the Wolves fans who remember him will love him. He wasn’t the prettiest player – he could throw a tackle in now and again. I think he got voted as the most-hated player in football at one point! I loved playing with him, and I actually played against him when he was at Palace when I was just starting out at Everton. He told me afterwards that he wanted to kick me but couldn’t get close enough!"

Lee Naylor - Wolves

MB: "Lee was another young kid who came through at Wolves. He was about my age, and he played left-back. He was only slim but was so strong and quick, and difficult to get past. A great left foot on him, too, and he loved a free-kick. He was also a great friend off the field."

Andrei Kanchelskis - Everton

MB: "He’d do things with the ball that I didn’t even think were possible. It was mad seeing him in training and how hard he could hit a ball, and how he could go past people. I’d say he was the best outfield player I played with at Everton – him or Anders Limpar. I’d just go with Kanchelskis because he was my type of player with his pace and the way he’d get at people."

Duncan Ferguson - Everton

MB: "I’m going with Dunc. Obviously, because he’s an Everton legend, but more than anything because of the way he’d help me off the pitch. I sort of struggled a bit to get my first goal and he helped me along. It was nice to be on the pitch with him at Chelsea when I scored my first goal. I think he was the first to celebrate with me and we’ve stayed friends since."
