Lampard On 'Unforgettable Day'

New Everton manager Frank Lampard says a thumping FA Cup victory over Brentford and euphoric Goodison Park atmosphere add up to “a day I will never forget”.

Lampard took charge of Everton for the first time on Saturday – five days after being appointed boss – and saw his side blow away their fellow Premier League team.

Yerry Mina and Richarlison scored either side of half-time to put the hosts in control.

Ivan Toney’s penalty halved Everton’s advantage but goals from Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend sealed an emphatic passage to Sunday morning’s fifth-round draw.

Lampard received a fabulous welcome from Evertonians, who were singing the former Chelsea player’s name long before full-time.

“I can only thank the fans for their support of me from the moment I walked out, through the match, and at the end when they’ve seen their team perform how they did,” said Lampard.

“On a personal level, a huge thank you. From the minute I signed for this club… it has been brilliant and to see that [reception and atmosphere] today was very special.

“It is a day I will never forget.

“It is only the start but I can’t help but get caught up in the emotion for a moment.

“I have felt the Goodison effect as a player and we wanted to produce it today, the way the players played and approached the game meant the fans brought into it straight away.

“I want to be the best I can and I think fans want to see their manager giving everything at every moment.

“I want to be there to support the players when they make passes or play through lines or make tackles, or are aggressive and cover distance.

“When Anthony Gordon makes a tackle that leads to a corner that leads to our third goal, those things are special and what we work towards.

“I was proud of the performance and it did get me excited.

“Now I need to calm down and work towards the league games ahead of us.

“But we saw some very nice signs.”

Everton go to Newcastle United for a potentially tinderbox Premier League encounter on Tuesday.

Lampard will definitely be without Ben Godfrey, who hurt his hamstring against Brentford and is set for a scan this week.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, meanwhile, trained alone on Friday, with Lampard planning to make a call on the striker’s fitness on Monday.

Regardless of personnel, however, Everton will travel north with their tails up after an energetic, proactive performance proved too much for Brentford to handle.

Everton had 14 shots, with four of the five on target defeating David Raya in the away team’s goal.

Mina headed in a Demarai Gray corner and Holgate’s strike came via a similar route, when the forward’s set-piece deflected off a defensive body for the centre-half to convert – Gordon earning the corner after robbing Brentford defender Mads Sorensen.

Between times, Richarlison chased onto Allan’s dinked pass to roll home. Townsend applied the gloss with a belting low strike in stoppage time.

“I have to put some perspective and calm on today,” added Lampard. “It was a good performance and we are through to the next round.

“But we have a lot of work to do, we need to get results within that process because it is so important for our league position.

“When we go to training tomorrow, I will say, ‘Well done, here are the positives, but we need to get better'.

“We want to play and make more passes and support each other better in possession.

“We are an Everton team, we must be aggressive and sprint and tackle when the ball is there to be won.

"And those things were there in abundance today, which makes me very happy.”

On the ubiquitous Gordon, Lampard added: “I have been watching Anthony this season and loved things about his game.

“Seeing him close-up, he has great quality and loves this club. It oozes out of him, which the fans love.

“And he has a great attitude... All the attributes to do what he wants in the game.

“He has what it takes and we saw that today.”
