What The Papers Say – 22 April

Quotes from Seamus Coleman feature across a number of Thursday’s publications after the Everton captain voiced his opinion on the doomed European Super League.

The proposals, said Coleman, left him with “a horrible feeling as a football fan, never mind as a player”.

“When I saw the statement from my own football club condemning the plans,” continued Coleman, “how strong they were and how they spoke from the heart, it gave me massive pride to be part of this football club.

“We are known as The People’s Club and that showed.

“Times like this make you so proud to be part of Everton because we are about the fans – and we always have been.”

Everton visit Arsenal for a Premier League fixture on Friday and the Daily Mail reports the home team will be missing two key performers.

Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang contracted malaria on international duty last month and remains unavailable, says the paper.

The Gabonese is likely to be joined on the sidelines by fellow forward Alexandre Lacazette, who hurt a hamstring in Sunday’s draw with Fulham.

Blackburn Rovers’ official website features an interview with manager Tony Mowbray, who fears on loan Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite will miss the remainder of this season.

Brainthwaite, 18, had made 10 appearances for the Championship club following a January switch to Ewood Park.

“He’s rolled his ankle pretty badly in training and I don’t think we’ll be seeing him again this season,” said Mowbray.

“I anticipate it’s ligament damage, but I haven’t been given a full report on it.”

Fotomac in Turkey claims Everton could land mooted striking target Cyle Larin for a figure below €9m.

Larin’s 39 appearances for Besiktas this season have yielded 19 goals but the Istanbul club are said to be mindful of the Canadian’s contract expiring in June 2022.

The 26-year-old, who has scored 12 goals in 33 international games, joined Besiktas from Orlando City in January 2018 and apparently also has interest from West Ham United.

Juventus have reportedly placed a £34.5m price tag on central defender Merih Demiral, who is rumoured to be on Everton’s summer shopping list.

Turk Demiral was one of the quartet of Juventus players Everton were invited to choose from as part-exchange for striker Moise Keane, according to a report in Gazzetta dello Sport last week.

Among the four, Everton were supposedly keen on either Demiral or Adrien Rabiot, over Aaron Ramsey or Federico Bernadeschi.

But CalcioMercato claims Juventus are now willing to strike a separate deal for Demiral, with Everton joined by Leicester City and Liverpool in pursuit of the 23-year-old.

Spanish outlet Fichajes.net says Sevilla want to take James Rodriguez back to La Liga.

Former Real Madrid forward James is in his first season at Goodison Park but, according the report, the Andalusians wants to arrange a swap with attacker Papu Gomez, who went to Sevilla from Atalanta in January this year.
