David Moyes expressed his frustration after a “ridiculous” decision saw Michael Keane receive a straight red card for violent conduct during Everton’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday evening.
The defender opened the scoring with a neat finish inside 17 minutes, but was later dismissed alongside Jack Grealish, who was given two yellow cards. Mateus Mane equalised for the visitors on 69 minutes, seeing the spoils shared at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Moyes was unhappy with the decision by referee Thomas Kirk – on the advice of VAR Chris Kavanagh – to send Keane off for 'violent conduct' after the centre-back pulled the hair of Tolu Arokodare while jumping up for a header.
"It was not violent, it is not forceful, and it is not deliberate,” said Moyes. “All those things I have said, it should not be a red card. Today, this was in the game on a ball coming up. If everybody grew their hair longer, there could be a chance you are going to get your hair pulled. I thought it was a ridiculous decision.
"It can't be violent conduct for that. In an action in the game, how would that warrant a red card? People getting pulled back in the box every five minutes, but you are letting them go? Ridiculous."
Moyes continued: “I think everybody was frustrated. I think when everyone saw the screen, they couldn’t believe it. I have had many times to see it now. It is certainly not deliberate.”
