Jordan Torunarigha’s 94th-minute own goal helped Everton to a deserved 2-1 win against Hamburg at Volksparkstadion – after the Blues Women beat Hamburg Frauen earlier on Saturday afternoon – to mark a historic day in Germany.

Merlin Röhl opened the scoring on 40 minutes, the versatile 24-year-old firing in to the roof of the net following excellent work by Thierno Barry, who gracefully back heeled the ball into the German’s path.

Patson Daka restored parity for the hosts five minutes after the interval, the substitute’s cute finish evading the reach of Mark Travers and nestling in to the bottom left corner.

At the other end, Röhl almost doubled his tally in his homeland – his cross deflecting on to the crossbar.

It seemed the scores would end level, but Braiden Graham intercepted a sloppy pass at the back from the hosts, race forward and watched his cross nick off Torunarigha and fly in to the back of the net – much to the delight of the travelling Toffees.

The double-header victory concludes a united day for David Moyes’ men and Scott Phelan’s side.
