Everton To Remember War Heroes Ahead Of Manchester United Fixture

Everton Football Club will pay its respects to heroes from the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy on Saturday with a tribute ahead of the Premier League game against Manchester United.

The Blues' Remembrance fixture will see the two team captains lay poppy wreaths on the pitch ahead of kick off, while a performance of The Last Post by Trumpet Major Mark Thompson of the Lancashire Artillery Band Volunteers, recorded at Prince Rupert's Tower, will be played on the stadium's big screens.

Photographs of Evertonian service personnel and members of Everton in the Community's Veteran's Hub programme will also be displayed, as well as a video paying tribute to all the Everton and Everton de Viña del Mar players who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars.

The same video will also feature across the Club's official social media channels as part of our matchday show, Everton Live, while manager Carlo Ancelotti pays his respects to the fallen in his programme notes for the visit of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. The Tri-Service Toffees, an officially-endorsed Supporters’ Club established in 2019, will feature on Everton Live as our ‘Supporters’ Club of the Match’.

Following the on-pitch tributes, players, staff and representatives from both Everton and Manchester United will join the match officials in observing a minute's silence to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice during conflict.

As during last Sunday's Premier League game against Newcastle United, Everton's players will wear shirts embroidered with a poppy, with proceeds from an online auction of the match-worn shirts set to help the Royal British Legion continue their invaluable work supporting veterans and their families.

To mark Remembrance Day 2019, the Everton Heritage Society produced a booklet to honour the fallen of Everton Football Club and Everton de Viña del Mar. The booklet, which details the football careers and war efforts of those tragically killed in the fighting, can be read here.
