GCSE Results Week: The Hospitality Industry

As part of GCSE Results Week and our focus into potential careers for school leavers, today it's the turn of the hospitality and catering sector and the varied roles and responsibilities the industry can offer for employees.

The hospitality and catering sector can provide part-time jobs and valuable work experience, but it can also offer fantastic full-time careers for individuals with great opportunities to ‘climb the ladder’.

This September, those aged 16 to 24-year-old who are currently not in employment, education or training can sign up for Everton in the Community’s 'New Futures' pathway programme, designed to provide employability and personal social development for participants and help them progress into jobs, education or training.

Email Yolande.Walsh@Evertonfc.com or call 07875 097453 to find out more and how to sign up for the programme.

See for yourself whether working in the hospitality and catering sector is for you.

What Is The Hospitality And Catering Industry?

The hospitality and catering sector is a great place to learn valuable transferable skills such as customer service, team building and organisational skills – skills that are vital in most jobs. There are jobs available in all sorts of venues from bars, restaurants and theatres to hotels, football stadiums and pubs.

Skills in maths and English are invaluable in this sector like most jobs, but the best thing you can offer an employer in this industry is your commitment, reliability and great customer service skills. If you have taken catering at school, you should talk about this on your application and at interview.

You could look at completing an apprenticeship in this industry and also look at gaining relevant sector-based qualifications such as customer service, food and drink, events management, plus many more!

Why The Hospitality Industry?

The hospitality and catering industry is one of the biggest sectors in our city. Liverpool is a very popular city with tourists from all over the world. The city has some amazing architecture, great history and many interesting places to visit.

Liverpool is also a stop-off point for cruise ships from all over the world. There are many hotels, restaurants, cafés and bars not just in the city centre, but throughout Merseyside. There's a variety of museums, art galleries and other places of interest for tourists to visit.

They all want somewhere to eat and drink and many of them fill the hotels and enjoy the great nightlife, go to the theatre or enjoy a live concert. Don’t forget that we also have two Premier League football clubs in the city, and Everton’s proposed new stadium will also house a variety of opportunities, too.

How To Be Part Of The Industry?

Being proactive to find the right role for you can be hugely rewarding. Follow the social media pages of the hospitality and catering employers who you are most passionate about for updates on when they are recruiting. Many establishments still advertise in their window so you could be in the right place at the right time. Don’t be afraid to go into your favourite restaurant and ask if they are recruiting. This shows that you are passionate about finding work, so walk around the city centre and start handing out CVs.

Everton’s official catering partner, Sodexo, regularly advertises jobs on their website here, but there are also many other job search pages in hospitality and catering, so make sure you keep looking to find the best opportunities for you.
