Ancelotti Provides Injury Update On Holgate And Gomes

Everton will check on the fitness of Mason Holgate and Andre Gomes before Sunday's trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers but boss Carlo Ancelotti admits he will make changes with the Blues set to play their fourth game in 12 days at Molineux.

Midfielder Gomes is set to be monitored after sustaining an ankle problem during Thursday's 1-1 home draw with Southampton, while Holgate was absent for the visit of the Saints due to the shin injury he suffered at Tottenham Hotspur on Monday.

Ancelotti also explained Sunday's game is too soon for Fabian Delph to return from the muscle injury that has prevented him from making an appearance since football's restart last month but said defender Yerry Mina has come through his two outings - which included a start against Southampton - following a thigh injury without any issues.

"Andre Gomes will be assessed tomorrow before training," said Ancelotti, speaking via video link from USM Finch Farm on Friday afternoon.

“He is not a big problem, he had a knock on his ankle. Today he is a little stiff but we hope tomorrow he can train and he can play Sunday.

“We will check tomorrow.

"I think it will be the same for Holgate. I think he can train tomorrow and we will check tomorrow."

This week's pair of games and the visit of Leicester City to Goodison Park on 1 July has added up to a busy sequence of fixtures for Everton since the turn of the month.

Sunday's game will come just 64 hours after the full-time whistle blew against Ralph Hasenhüttl's in-form Saints and Ancelotti knows he will have to shuffle his pack.

Following the game at Molineux, Everton host Aston Villa on 16 July, before travelling to Sheffield United four days later.

The season then ends at home against Bournemouth on 26 July.

“It [Sunday] will be tough, for sure. Wolves are fighting for Europe so I expect a really tough game," said Ancelotti.

“We want to keep fighting and keep going until the end of the season.

“The fact Wolves have had one more day rest is important.

“I have to take care of the line-up. I want to keep it fresh and do some changes for the game.

“We don’t have time to recover properly.”

Asked about Mina's return from injury, Ancelotti said: “His performance [against Southampton] was good, better in the second half than in the first half.

“His injury is gone, he is quite fresh. I think he can play on Sunday.”

On Delph, he added: "[Fabian] is recovering but it takes time because he had an injury on his thigh that he had before.

"He has to recover well. I am sure he will be able to come back before the end of the season but the priority is to recover well and properly."
