Peter Reid Born: On This Day

Blues legend Peter Reid was born ON THIS DAY in 1956.

Reid spent his formative years as a player at Bolton Wanderers before signing for Everton in 1982.

He went on to become a pivotal member of the team that won two league titles, an FA Cup and a European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Along the way the midfielder picked up the 1985 PFA Player of the Year award and won 13 England caps, helping to change the fortunes of the national team when he replaced the injured Bryan Robson in Mexico during the 1986 World Cup.

Reid played 235 times for Everton, scoring 13 goals but his influence and his contribution transcended mere statistics.

His personality, determination, drive and leadership were just what a young Everton squad needed and he remains one of the most revered figures in the Club’s history.

Happy birthday, Reidy!

The only Everton player to perform at the 1998 World Cup in France secured his safe passage through from the group stage ON THIS DAY.

Slaven Bilic was in the Croatia side that defeated Japan 1-0 in Nantes and that second win in as many games was enough to see them through.

Croatia were unfancied at the start of the tournament but went all the way to the semi-finals before being beaten by the host nation and eventual winners.

Bilic came back from the tournament with a groin problem and was never the same player again. He made only five more appearances for Everton before returning to Croatia to see his playing days out with Hajduk Split.

An Everton player had his World Cup dream shattered ON THIS DAY in 1990…by a Brazilian who nearly joined the Blues!

Stuart McCall was in the Scotland team that needed to beat Brazil to progress from the group stage but they lost 1-0, with Muller coming off the bench to score the only goal of the game.

Four years later, Muller came within a whisker of joining Everton when Mike Walker was in charge. The striker passed a medical at Goodison but the deal collapsed because of a misunderstanding of the UK tax laws!
