Skipper On Everton's 'Heart And Pride' In Royals Success

Everton Women’s captain Lucy Graham revelled in a performance full of “heart and pride” in the Blues’ 3-1 victory over Reading in Southport on Sunday.

Chloe Kelly’s first career hat-trick secured a comfortable victory over the Royals at Pure Stadium as Willie Kirk’s side moved up to fifth in WSL.

Graham had a helping hand in the opener, threading through a pinpoint pass for Kelly to stroke home on 11 minutes.

Despite their first-half dominance, the Blues found themselves level with their opponents, Megan Finnigan bringing down Angharad James in the box, with Fara Williams on hand to blast home a leveller on the half-hour mark.

It soon turned into the Kelly show, however, as the England international scored straight from a corner stroking home Graham’s teasing cross.

The Blues survived a late flurry from the visitors to claim a well-deserved victory.

"I thought the main focus was to bring some heart and desire to the game and we did just that,” said midfielder Graham.

“We played Reading at their own game, which was to be strong and physical.

“I think the quality we showed on the pitch was great and we were more clinical as well, so I am absolutely buzzing for the girls.

“To be captain today, I was proud to lead these girls out there.”

Graham was lively in the contest, pulling the strings from midfield, while notching two assists for Kelly.

The forward’s hot streak in front of goal follows an injury-hit patch last season, and Graham paid tribute to Kelly for her qualities.

“Chloe spent a lot of last season on the sideline, which was really gutting for her,” Graham explained.

“She has come back with a bang and is playing with a smile on her face, showing energy and she is so hard to get the ball off when she has that clinical touch as well.

“She is a class player and I am so happy for her.”
