Legendary defender Mick Lyons has been named this year’s Everton Giant at the 10th Annual End Of Season Awards.

Following in the footsteps of such Blues greats as Peter Reid, Howard Kendall and Duncan Ferguson, Lyons was inducted by fellow Giants Graeme Sharp and Derek Temple.

Once quoted as saying he would "run through a brick wall for Everton", those words epitomised the attitude of a player who led by example and was unfortunate to finish his career without amassing any major honours.

Nevertheless, he is the latest player to be inducted into the Club's prestigious Hall of Fame for his 473 appearances across an 11-year spell.

Making his debut in 1971, he became a permanent fixture at the heart of the Toffees’ rearguard throughout the remainder of the decade, spending many of those seasons as the Club’s captain.

Despite making his name as a no nonsense, tough-tackling defender, Lyons would occasionally be pushed up front should the need arise. Such was his potency in the opposition box, he scored a creditable 59 goals for the Toffees.

Surprisingly, Lyons never won a full England cap but did manage two appearances for England ‘B’ in 1978.

In 1982, he was allowed to leave for Sheffield Wednesday but by then he had stamped his mark on annals of Toffees history.

Reflecting on his honour, Lyons – a boyhood Blue – said: “It is a real privilege for me to be among those players, some of whom I know and others that I have watched.

“I am absolutely made up. I am very honoured and I would like to thank everyone for awarding me this accolade.

“I still follow Everton every week from Australia, where I now live. 

“I’d like to wish Roberto and the lads the very best ahead of next season.”
