Everton Giant: Year Inducted - 2020

A two-time league title winner with Everton, Gary Stevens advanced through the Blues’ youth ranks before making his debut in 1982.

When Howard Kendall first brought him into the side Stevens was a left-sided midfielder but he was quickly converted into a marauding right-back.

Stevens played his part in Everton's opening goal at Wembley against Watford in the 1984 FA Cup final triumph– his pace enabling him to reach a loose ball from a half-cleared cross to set up Graeme Sharp for a clinical finish.

He was also an integral part of the Everton team which won the League Championship and European Cup Winners Cup in 1985.

Stevens made 293 appearances for the Blues, scoring 13 times before moving to Glasgow Rangers in 1988.

Stevens’ exemplary service for Everton was recognised in 2020 when he was named as an Everton Giant by Club Chairman Bill Kenwright.

“Two things I love in football are athleticism – that he looks a player – and… you feel safe when he has the ball,” Mr Kenwright told evertontv.

“I always felt so safe when Gary was playing for us.

“I thought he was absolutely immaculate as a right-back… the best right-back in the world.

“Gary truly is an Everton great.”
