1931/32 Season

Goals, goals, goals. This was the season when Everton simply tore the opposition apart with their unfailing ability to find the back of the net.

A year after gaining promotion to Division One, and a year before their FA Cup triumph, Everton reigned supreme.

Dixie Dean was there again with 45 goals to follow his 60 in 1927/28 but he was supported by Tommy Johnson, signed a season earlier from Manchester City, Jimmy Stein, Tommy White and Jimmy Dunn.

With Warney Cresswell and Ben Williams controlling at full-back, Everton had a well-rounded attack.

In total 116 goals were scored, 84 at Goodison, even though it took Dean himself six games to find his goalscoring boots.

But he could not have picked a better place to start, a three goal feast against Liverpool in 21 minutes was followed by 20 goals in 10 games, five against both Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea among them.

The Autumn months brought great success for the club, eight of nine games were won and they took a five-points lead over West Bromwich Albion.

While West Brom fell away Arsenal took up the challenge, beating the Blues 3-1 at Goodison a week before Everton lost 2-0 at Blackpool.

But Everton fought, defeating both Sheffield clubs before triumphing over Aston Villa and West Brom to set them on a streak of results which left Arsenal without a hope.
