Hill Dickinson Stadium joined some of Liverpool’s most iconic waterfront landmarks in turning green to raise awareness of mitochondrial disease as part of a global campaign.

Everton's waterfront home was illuminated alongside the Royal Liver Building, home to the Club’s headquarters, and the neighbouring Port of Liverpool Building to mark World Mitochondrial Disease Week.

The city of Liverpool landmarks were among hundreds of buildings and monuments worldwide taking part in Light Up for Mito, the centrepiece of World Mitochondrial Disease Week, which ran from 14-20 September.

More than 300 landmarks have supported the global initiative, including Niagara Falls, the Colosseum in Rome and Toronto’s CN Tower, with buildings illuminated green to increase understanding of mitochondrial disease and show solidarity with those living with the condition and their families.

Mitochondrial disease is a group of genetic disorders that prevent the body’s cells from producing enough energy to function properly. It can affect almost any part of the body, particularly high-energy organs including the brain, heart, muscles, liver and kidneys.

Symptoms vary significantly and can include muscle weakness and fatigue, seizures, movement and coordination difficulties, vision or hearing loss and heart or organ problems. The condition can be progressive, debilitating and life-limiting and, while treatments can help manage symptoms, there is currently no cure.

Everton’s involvement in World Mitochondrial Disease Week is part of the Club’s commitment to using the profile of Hill Dickinson Stadium to raise awareness of important causes.

The Club will continue that commitment next week by supporting Organ Donation Week, helping to highlight the importance of organ donation and the life-saving difference donors can make.

Further details of Everton’s activity to mark Organ Donation Week will be shared in the coming days.
