Everton progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a brilliant 3-1 win over Newcastle United at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The Blues set up a last-eight tie at League Two outfit Fleetwood Town, after first-half goals from James Garner and Hayden Hackney – his first for the Club – and a Thierno Barry strike saw David Moyes' side eliminate the Magpies.
Dan Burn pulled one back for Newcastle with a close-range header late on, but it proved little more than a footnote on an otherwise feel-good evening on home soil.
It was an even opening to the contest under the floodlights in front of a sold-out crowd that included Prime Minister Andy Burnham, with openings at both ends of the pitch, but Hackney was unable to get enough on his glancing effort to trouble Lukas Hornicek, while, James Tarkowski intervened with a superb last-ditch tackle on William Osula at the other end.
The Toffees opened the scoring 11 minutes before the half-time interval when Tyrique George pressured Amar Dedic into conceding possession deep inside Newcastle territory and as the ball popped up, Hackney helped it on its way to Garner, who found the corner of the net with a fine curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.
Hackney – on only his third start for Everton since a summer move from Middlesbrough – then registered on the scoresheet himself, converting with a well-taken first-time finish after Barry picked out the on-rushing midfielder with an inch-perfect cross.
Newcastle rolled the dice at the start of the second period with a triple substitution that saw Yoane Wissa, Joelinton and Anthony Elanga all introduced.
But Moyes' men defended solidly as Newcastle came racing out of the blocks, Elanga snatching at a shot from a half-cleared corner just after the hour mark representing the closest the visitors came to halving the deficit.
Hackney – having earlier been booked – left the field to a standing ovation, as he made way for Harrison Armstrong moments later.
Everton sealed the tie 21 minutes remaining, the ever-energeting Dewsbury-Hall breaking free down the left before picking out Barry, who took one touch to control and another to dispatch the ball into the top corner of the net to send the home crowd into raptures.
Burn denied the Blues a clean sheet at the end with a close-range header.
Next up for Everton is a trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday night – and a Carabao Cup quarter-final with Fleetwood Town now also on the horizon.
