Everton has signed Argentinian midfielder Carlos Alcaraz on loan from Flamengo for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign, with an option to buy at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old, who has Premier League experience with Southampton, becomes David Moyes’ first signing since returning as manager last month.

‘Charly’ Alcaraz, an attacking midfielder who combines flair with a strong will to win, began his career in his native Argentina with Racing Club, making his debut for the senior side at the age of 17, and scoring the winning goal in the 2022 Argentine Champions Trophy final against Boca Juniors.

After joining the Blues, Alcaraz – who will wear the number 24 shirt – told evertontv: “I am very happy to join Everton, such a great club, with a very good fanbase. I'm very happy and I'm looking forward to start training with my teammates and see the fans at the stadium.

“I am ready for any challenge with this beautiful club so that's why I came and accepted the offer to keep fighting for my dreams. I want to tell the fans that whenever I wear this shirt, I will give my best, I will give everything I have to take Everton to the top, which is where they deserve to be.”

The Argentina Under-23 international moved to Southampton in January 2023, making his debut against Everton at Goodison Park.

An impressive campaign followed, Alcaraz scoring seven goals to earn an improved contract just six months after moving to St Mary’s, along with a call-up to the senior Argentina squad.

His ability caught the attention of Italian giants Juventus, where the youngster moved to on loan in January 2024, making 12 appearances for the Turin club and winning the Coppa Italia.

In August last year, Alcaraz joined reigning Brazilian champions Flamengo, producing three goals and two assists in 19 outings, ahead of his switch to Goodison Park.

On his new signing, Everton boss Moyes said: “We’re happy Carlos has agreed to join us on loan until the end of the season.

“We’ve been looking to add players to the squad to give us more depth, particularly after the recent injuries we’ve picked up.

“Carlos has Premier League experience, he’s still young and we believe he can bring some energy to the team which will help us between now and the end of the season.”

Everton Director of Football, Kevin Thelwell, added: “Charly is a welcome addition to the squad and a player who brings Premier League and international experience and, at the age of 22, has potential to get even better.

“He is an excellent ball carrier who can add real quality to our attack, and we think he is a player who will really excite Evertonians.”
