Jordan Pickford has revealed his determination to send Everton on a European tour for next season, while explaining the Blues’ mindset ahead of a “massive” Merseyside derby.
The Toffees welcome Liverpool to Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday (2pm BST) for the first-ever Merseyside derby to be played at Everton’s world-class waterfront home.
A big test against the Blues’ local rivals, the fixture follows Everton’s 2-2 draw at Brentford last weekend. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall netted a stoppage-time equaliser to secure a deserved point, keeping the Toffees in European contention.
“The manager’s aim in pre-season was to get Everton back in Europe and that’s still our aim,” said Pickford, looking ahead to Sunday’s clash.
“We’ve got six big games to go.
“We got a point [against Brentford] and we take on Liverpool next. It’ll be a massive game – the first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson.
“We’re taking each game as it comes and hopefully, we’ll get the Toffees on a European tour.”
A victory against Liverpool this weekend would see Everton climb to 50 Premier League points, closing the gap on Arne Slot’s fifth-placed side to just two points.
Everton were outstanding last time out at Hill Dickinson Stadium, earning an emphatic 3-0 win over Chelsea.
Pickford recognises Everton will need to be at their best again to take the three points on Sunday.
“We’ve got a big game against Liverpool – the reigning champions,” he added. “They’re obviously not having the best of seasons this season, but they’re still a threat.
“It’s a game we’re looking forward to.
“We’re taking each game as it comes and focusing on the next game we’ve got. That’s what the manager is telling us to do – just take each game as they come.”
