A beaming smile from one ear to the other, Honoka Hayashi expressed her delight after being nominated for the WSL’s Player of the Month and Goal of the Month for December.

The Japan international had been in fine form for the Blues prior to the winter break, scoring against reigning league champions Chelsea, while her curling strike against Arsenal in front of the Gwladys Street at Goodison Park was shortlisted as one of the best strikes of the month.

Upon being told of her two nominations, the midfielder let out a loud expression of joy in her native tongue, raising a fist in the air in celebration of her recognition.

“To be honest, I was very surprised,” Hayashi told evertonfc.com. “I am very happy with the two nominations. They make me feel very proud and I am just grateful.

“I am very happy that I was able to score that goal against Arsenal, but I owe it all to my teammates, so I want to thank them all. Ornella did very well in the build-up, beating her marker to then find me in a good position to shoot.”

The goal against Chelsea ended the West-Londoners’ 585-day unbeaten streak in the WSL – a record spanning 31 games.

“It was a very memorable day,” reflected the 27-year-old. “We knew it was going to be a very tough game but we defended excellently and took our chance when it came.

“It was great to celebrate with our fans and as a team at the final whistle. I will never forget being lifted up by Rambo!"

Brian Sorensen’s side then hosted the Gunners at Goodison, hoping to follow up the impressive streak-ending victory in their last outing. After Katie McCabe opened the scoring with a venomous volley, Hayashi unleashed a brilliant strike of her own, caressing the ball in to the top right corner, before ultimately falling to a 3-1 defeat to the visitors.

Reflecting on that strike, Hayashi added: “It was an important goal for me. It was my first at our new home and therefore is one I will always treasure. I am very happy I have had the chance to shine this season.

“I will continue to work hard to help the team. That is always the goal. If my goals and overall performances can do that, then I am satisfied.”

The winners of the WSL's December awards will be announced on 8 January.
