Everton fell to a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at Goodison Park in the Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon.
Three goals in the space of five minutes shaped the contest. Katie McCabe opened the scoring inside 11 minutes with a powerful strike from distance, but Honoka Hayashi responded almost immediately, restoring parity with a clinical effort from the edge of the area.
Arsenal quickly regained the advantage as Alessia Russo finished from close range, before Olivia Smith added a late third with a long-range volley to seal the points for the visitors.
Head coach Brian Sorensen named an unchanged XI from the side that secured a historic 1–0 victory over reigning champions Chelsea last time out.
Courtney Brosnan captained the side from between the sticks, shielded by a backline of Hikaru Kitagawa, Martina Fernández, Ruby Mace and Rion Ishikawa in front of her.
Kelly Gago led the line, supported by Ornella Vignola and Toni Payne on the flanks. Maz Pacheco returned to the bench for the first time since the Manchester City fixture after spending a month sidelined through injury.
The visitors began on the front foot, with Mace called into action early on. She firstblocked Mariona Caldentey’s whipped cross before closing down Caitlin Foord on the edge of the box to prevent the winger from unleashing a shot.
Mace continued to impress defensively, clearing Russo’s delivery, though the ball only fell as far as McCabe, who broke the deadlock with a thunderous long-range effort that found the bottom corner just after the ten minute mark.
The Blues hit back instantly as Hayashi levelled with a fierce strike from outside the box, beating Anneke Borbe at her far post. However, the visitors restored their lead just two minutes later, with Russo converting from close range after Brosnan’s initial save was adjudged to have crossed the line.
Brosnan produced a string of important saves midway through the half, first commanding her area from a corner before brilliantly denying Russo from close range to keep Everton within touching distance at the break.
Everton threatened an equaliser as the break approached, with Payne bursting down the right after being released by Vignola. Her dangerous delivery flashed across the face of goal but just evaded Gago.
Arsenal began the second period quickly, with McCabe sending a teasing ball across the six-yard box, though Brosnan reacted sharply to smother the danger before Russo could create contact.
Looking to shift the momentum, Sorensen made a triple substitution on 59 minutes, introducing Karen Holmgaard, Katja Snoeijs and Rosa van Gool in place of Gago, Wheeler and Momiki. Katie Robinson replaced Vignola in the 76th minute before Hayashi made way for Hayley Ladd late on.
Despite Everton’s efforts, the Gunners' persistent pressure eventually told, with Smith adding a third in the 87th minute, unleashing a clinical 25-yard volley.
Payne attempted to spark an attacking response, surging down the right flank, but was well marshalled by Kyra Cooney-Cross, who prevented a delivery as the Blues were unable to find a breakthrough before the final whistle.
