Everton Football Club Environmental Sustainability Policy
Introduction, Purpose and Scope
At Everton Football Club, sustainability is an integral part of who we are and how we operate.
Founded in 1878, Everton is one of the most historic and respected clubs in English football. With nine League Championships, five FA Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup to our name, our rich heritage spans nearly 150 years – and with that legacy comes responsibility.
This Environmental Sustainability Policy outlines the Club’s environmental commitments and applies to the management and operation of all sites under our stewardship, including Goodison Park, Finch Farm and our new world-class home at Bramley-Moore Dock – Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Policy also extends to the wider Everton network, including Everton in the Community, and addresses key areas of our value chain, such as procurement, supporter and player travel, and supplier relations.
We recognise the positive influence we can have – not only through our matchday operations and fan base – but through the broader Everton family. Sustainability is embedded in our values and decision-making processes because we understand that protecting our planet is essential to our long-term success. Our motto, Nil Satis Nisi Optimum – Nothing but the best is good enough – applies to everything we do, including our ambition to make a lasting, positive environmental impact.
Our new stadium stands as a symbol of this commitment, designed with sustainability at its core. It features rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient systems and green space integration. Meanwhile, our Sustainable Procurement Policy and Supplier Code of Conduct demonstrate how we are driving change across our value chain by holding suppliers to high environmental, social and ethical standards.
While we are proud of the steps we’ve taken, we are also realistic. Football clubs, including Everton, contribute to climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. We acknowledge our responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, limit our environmental impact and build resilience across our operations and communities in response to climate-related risks.
Developing a Strategy Around Our Key Focus Areas
To determine where we can make the greatest difference, Everton has undertaken a comprehensive materiality assessment to identify our most important environmental sustainability topics.
Within the environmental pillar, the most important topics to Everton are:
Biodiversity | Climate change adaptation | Emissions | Energy management |
Materials and waste management | Supplier environmental assessments | Transport | Water and wastewater management |
These focus areas guide the environmental pillar of our wider Sustainability Strategy, which will define specific goals, KPIs and action plans to deliver progress. The strategy is reviewed regularly to ensure it reflects evolving stakeholder expectations and the Club’s long-term ambitions.
Our key environmental commitments include:
Achieve net zero (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) by 2040: in alignment with targets set by the Premier League and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. We recognise that the majority of our emissions are emitted indirectly (Scope 3), through our value chain, which includes fan travel. Given the complexity of reducing indirect emissions, we are committed to working with our supply chain partners, the Premier League, and local authorities to achieve net zero across our entire value chain.
Embrace/foster circularity and zero waste.
Limit our water usage and protect the water resources, which we are heavily reliant upon.
Pursue biodiversity improvements across our sites and locations.
To ensure we remain accountable, we will report on progress annually, using this data to evaluate our performance and refocus efforts where needed. We already track our Scope 1 and 2 emissions and are actively developing methodologies to measure and disclose Scope 3 emissions more comprehensively.
Strong Governance and Environmental Compliance
Our approach to environmental governance is underpinned by a robust set of policies and procedures designed to promote ethical behaviour, manage risk and uphold compliance. These policies apply to all Everton employees and business partners, and are regularly updated to reflect best practice and ensure adherence to relevant legislation – including environmental laws and regulations.
“The People’s Club”: Engaging Our Stakeholders
As The People’s Club, engagement with our stakeholders sits at the heart of our sustainability approach. We actively consult and collaborate with a wide range of groups to shape our strategy and listen to their priorities and feedback.
In partnership with a specialist sustainability consultancy, we hosted a series of workshops to define what sustainability means to Everton and how we can best include our stakeholders in the journey ahead.
Our key stakeholders are:
Supporters | Employees | Everton in the Community | Local communities | Players |
Club partners | Suppliers | Government | Industry associations and peers | Media |
Ongoing stakeholder engagement – from internal forums and inductions to community outreach and digital surveys – ensures we continue to learn and evolve.
Communicating Our Policy and Strategy
We are committed to making this Policy and our broader Sustainability Strategy accessible and actionable for everyone connected to the Club. We will share this Policy through:
Staff training and internal briefings
Communications to supporters and fan organisations
Distribution to suppliers via our dedicated supplier platform
Inclusion in community programmes
Publication on evertonfc.com
We want every person associated with Everton – whether fan, player, employee, partner or supplier – to understand their role in delivering our environmental goals and making a real difference.
