Silva: 'Desire And Focus' Key For Blues

Marco Silva has called on his Everton team to maintain the “focus and desire” displayed in their past two Premier League matches as the Blues target a strong finish to the season.

The Toffees followed up a comprehensive 3-0 victory at Cardiff City last Tuesday with an energetic, resilient performance in a high-octane Merseyside derby draw on Sunday.

The Blues went toe-to-toe with city rivals Liverpool at Goodison Park, the Blues’ intensity galvanising an already rocking crowd at the Grand Old Lady.

Everton covered more ground than their opponents - Silva's charges ran a total of 69.8 miles compared to Liverpool players' 68 -  and completed more sprints.

Toffees boss Silva has now challenged his team to build on their past two performances in their upcoming Premier League matches.

Next up for the Blues is an away clash at Newcastle United on Saturday, before Chelsea visit L4 on 17 March.

“We have many points still to win and it is our obligation to show always this desire and focus,” he Silva told evertontv.

“We did it last Tuesday, and we did again against Liverpool.

“It showed us we are building the confidence we wanted again.

“Two clean sheets in a row, also, it’s what we want. If you cannot win the match, you cannot give our opponent the chance to win.”

Everton’s intent against Liverpool is highlighted by the fact they spent 55.6 per cent of the match in opposition territory.

In a game of few chances, Theo Walcott flashed a shot over the bar in the first half, before Bernard was agonisingly close to getting his outstretched boot on the end of a cross from countryman Richarlison late in the piece.

Silva says the Blues are determined to deliver another positive display against Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle on Saturday – and leave the north east with three points.

“We performed well but, unfortunately, we did not achieve the main thing, which was the win,” he said.

“Everything we wanted was to give the fans the three points. We showed that desire for the whole game, with the quality.

“With different actions in the attack, we can achieve the goal that can give us the chance to win the match.

“We had a good balance and we had our moments [going forward], also.

“We have many games still to play and we will do our best to win as many as we can.”
