Calvert-Lewin Sets New Everton Challenge

Dominic Calvert-Lewin believes Everton have put to bed what had been a “difficult run” both personally and collectively but acknowledges the challenge now is to maintain more consistency in performances.

Everton’s No.9 further endeared himself to Evertonians on Wednesday night as his second-half headed goal helped the Blues to a memorable 2-0 win over title-chasing rivals Liverpool.

In doing so, Calvert-Lewin netted his third goal from his past four appearances, while Everton secured a third straight home victory - each with a clean sheet.

Reflecting on this recent positive spell, Calvert-Lewin told evertonfc.com: “That gives you the foundation to play from, when everyone is doing their jobs well.

“Moving together as a unit defensively, in particular. You can build from that, then when you get goals it makes it extremely hard for teams to get back into the game. Liverpool are a good side but they didn’t have the answers [on Wednesday night]. That’s what we are about and that is what Goodison is about."

Everton return to action with a third home game in the space of six days on Saturday evening (kick-off 5.30pm) as they welcome Brentford to L4. For Calvert-Lewin, that game is a chance to keep building on the squad's gathering momentum.

“We need to do it more consistently, everyone knows that,” said the forward ahead to the clash. “There have been some sub-par performances this season, we went on a difficult run, personally and collectively - but we have come through that.

“We have won the last three [at home] so it is onwards and upwards and we have to look forward, and be positive.”

From the moment the players stepped out of the tunnel on Wednesday night, Goodison Park was a cauldron of noise - just as it was three days earlier in the victory against Nottingham Forest.

The players undoubtedly fed off that energy from the Evertonains, and Calvert-Lewin believes that helped create a real unity that acted as a springboard to the Blues’ victory.

“Nights like Wednesday make you feel like the hard work pays off,” he explained. “You hang in there at times, it gets difficult and sometimes you feel like you’re pushing and not getting much back.

“But it’s nights like Wednesday, 2-0 up with Goodison rocking, all running around for each other, things are going our way, they (Liverpool) didn’t have the answers and everything comes together.

“Words can’t describe it, everyone can feel it, but it is hard to put into words. As a collective, players on the pitch and fans in the stadium, it is like a total oneness. It is so loud and electric, there has been a handful of times it’s been like that, and when it is, it is the best feeling in the world.”

Calvert-Lewin’s dominant display up against a robust defensive duo of Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté - plus his goal - earned him the Club’s Player of the Match award in the midweek win.

“I’m pleased but that is what I can do,” said Calvert-Lewin recollecting on his own display.  “That’s been the frustrating thing this season because I have not done that consistently enough.

“Everyone knows what I am capable of, and nobody more than me. So that’s a normal night for me and that is what I expect from myself in every game. It’s nice when a plan comes together. You get on the scoresheet and put in a good performance, and you get the three points.”
