What The Papers Say - 19 April

Dwight McNeil is determined for Everton to return to winning ways as the Blues prepare for Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Quoted by the Liverpool ECHO, McNeil admitted: "It's hard; it's a tough one to take [the loss to Fulham]. When we scored, we finished the half strong and could have been 2-1 up. Another poor goal to concede, and then it's tough to get back into the game.

"I think everyone played with freedom and on the front foot, and we finished the half well, but if you don't take your chances, you get punished. Every game for us is massive.”

Despite the disappointment, McNeil is keen to bounce back, and has confidence his team can do just that.

"It's a tough one to take home,” he said. “I think we've been in this position before, and the lads know what we need to do to stay up. I have confidence in that, but it's a tough one to take.

"We know where we have gone wrong, and we want to correct it. Big week and big games ahead."

Elsewhere, Sean Dyche spoke about the decision to include Ishe Samuels-Smith in the First-Team squad for Saturday’s game.

The 16-year-old defender was an unused substitute at Goodison but played the following day for Everton Under-21s against Liverpool.

Despite a strong showing against the talented Ben Doak, Samuels-Smith was sent off late in the game to cap off an eventful weekend for the youngster.

Quoted by the Liverpool ECHO, Dyche discussed Samuels-Smith’s inclusion: “Ishe, the young kid on the bench, I said, 'It’s a brilliant game for you, son, because you’ll experience what it really is'. The good stuff always looks after itself.

“You’ve got a 16-year-old kid looking at the game, going, ‘What’s this all about?’ That’s the reality, that’s when your growth really comes, in these times. A good day always looks after itself, or virtually always but when the hard days come, what do you learn from that, how can you correct your performance?”
