Karen Holmgaard

Karen Holmgaard joined Everton with her twin sister Sara in August 2022 on a two-year-deal.

The pair are the first twins to have signed for the Club since Kelly and Vicky Jones who joined Everton in 2012.

While identical in appearance, the sisters offer unique aspects to their game but share the same willingness for intensity in their work.

The twins joined from German side Turbine Potsdam and had been inseparable in their professional career prior to their move to Everton.

However, they soon experienced a football career at separate clubs, with Sara spending the first half of the 2022/23 season on loan at former club Fortuna Hjørring.

Despite the potential difficulty of being apart, the sisters flourished at their respective sides, with Karen settling in well to life in the Women's Super League.

Reuniting with boss Brian Sørensen, Karen made 24 appearances for the Blues, scoring two goals and providing three assists from deep in midfield.

Holmgaard grew up in Mid Jutland and excelled in both football and handball during school.

She was one of five Denmark internationals in the 2022/23 Everton squad, and moved to Merseyside following the conclusion of the 2022 European Championship.

Karen, alongside her sister, were involved in Denmark’s international team during the tournament.

The defensive midfielder made her debut for Everton in September 2022, coming off the bench in a 1-0 win over Leicester City.

She got off the mark in a Blues shirt three months later, striking home against Manchester United in the Continental League Cup in December 2022.

Her sister Sara returned from her loan spell at the beginning of 2023, with the pair able to play alongside each other in Everton colours for the first time in January 2023 in a FA Cup match against Birmingham City.
