Jags Is England Future
Jagielka should be an England first choice says Phil Neville.
Phil Neville believes Everton teammate Phil Jagielka should now be one of England's first choice centre-halves.
With John Terry having retired from the international game and Rio Ferdinand's career at that level seemingly over, Jagielka is part of a central defensive pool that includes Gary Cahill, Ryan Shawcross and former Blue Joleon Lescott.
And Everton captain Neville believes Jagielka and Lescott are the best men for the heart of Roy Hodgson’s backline.
The 54-cap Neville told evertontv: "They play well together, they are a left-foot, right-foot combination, they know each other and are friends. They are almost telepathic.
"Good defences are built on partnerships as well as good individuals and the Jagielka-Lescott partnership is probably the best we have got."
Indeed, Neville reckons Jagielka can go on to rack-up a significant number of international caps.
"I see no reason why not," he continued. "He played well in the last game (against Ukraine) and he has never let England down. Every game he plays he seems to be settling in and feeling at home.
"There is a maturity to his play. There's him, Gary Cahill and Joleon Lescott and the partnership Jags has with Joleon bodes well for him."
The former Manchester United man also gave a considered assessment of Terry's exit from the international scene, adding: "It was probably inevitable, there were always question marks because of what was happening off the pitch with John. Looking at the bigger picture it might add a couple of years on to his career. He has been playing regularly on a Saturday and Wednesday throughout his career and it takes its toll. If he wants to continue, sometimes something has to give."
