Captain for the night Ashley Williams says Everton were left “hurt” by the manner of their defeat in Lyon.
The Blues held their hosts for 68 minutes and had two good opportunities to take the lead before goals from Bertrand Traore, Houssem Aouar and Memphis Depay inflicted a 3-0 defeat.
The last of those efforts came after Everton had been reduced to 10 men following a second yellow card for midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and Williams felt it was a cruel final outcome at the Groupama Stadium.
The result means the Toffees can no longer progress to the knockout stages of the Europa League and the defender said: “It’s disappointing. We don’t want to lose any game, especially not like that in the end.
“I thought we did well for 60 minutes and we stuck to the game plan. It was always going to be a difficult game away but it does hurt to lose the game by that many goals.”
Everton now face Watford in the Premier League in three days’ time, looking to record what would be a first victory in nine.
“I think the only thing you can do is just get your head down and recover before an important game on Sunday against Watford,” Williams added. “We need to work hard in training, look at this game and where we went wrong and try to learn from that again.
“We just need to keep trying to do what the manager tells us to do. Hopefully, if we do that, something will drop for us.”
Summer signing Cuco Martina was taken to hospital after falling awkwardly during a first-half challenge in France.
The 28-year-old has since been released after undergoing an assessment but Williams admitted the incident had left him concerned for his defensive colleague.
“It’s not nice for any player, if it’s on your team or the other team,” he said. “You never want to see anyone go off on a stretcher, especially with the way he fell.”
