Williams Recovering In LA After Undergoing Surgery

Ashley Williams is recovering in Los Angeles after undergoing surgery in hospital having suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung during Wales’s goalless draw against Mexico on Tuesday in Pasadena.

Surgery was performed on the Everton centre-back at the Ronald Reagan UCLA hospital in Beverley Hills after he had been forced off midway through the first-half following a collision with Mexico striker Javier Hernandez.

Everton medical staff are in contact with Williams and the medical team of the Football Association of Wales and it is anticipated that the 33-year-old defender will make a swift and full recovery.

Speaking on Facebook, Williams said: “[It’s been a] crazy couple of weeks.

“[It was] great to be back in a Wales shirt and with the lads. However, after coming off after 20 minutes with multiple breaks on two ribs, I went to hospital & found out I had punctured my left lung which led to it collapsing.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff at Ronald Reagan UCLA hospital in Beverley Hills for looking after me and making sure surgery went as comfortable as possible. Look forward to flying home and resting up now before the new season.”

Williams, who has 79 caps for his country, will remain in the United States, with the rest of the Wales squad having flown home.
