Delighted DCL Reviews Burnley Victory

Dominic Calvert-Lewin says he was “full of confidence” heading into Saturday’s victory against Burnley – while revealing his winner against the Clarets was a tactic worked on ahead of the game.

The Everton striker put the Blues ahead just before half-time against Vincent Kompany’s visitors, and the Toffees managed to hold onto the 1-0 scoreline to pick up an important three points.

Calvert-Lewin’s goal marks his second in as many games, after the forward netted a crucial spot-kick to equalise in midweek against Newcastle.

Closing down Clarets’ goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, he blocked the ball, which rebounded into the air, before finding the back of the net.

“I nearly had one in the first 10 minutes when I pressed him, so I thought I’d have another go,” said Calvert-Lewin, speaking after the game. “Thankfully, I got the ricochet.

“We know the way they play. They like to overplay at times, so we knew if we could set traps like we did today for the goal, we can capitalise on that. It was something we worked on in the week.

“A few games ago, I might not have got a goal like that, and it’s just the way it goes. You get one, and then they start to flow and go in.

“It was a long period for myself and it becomes a mind game at times. You’re thinking about when your next goal is going to come. I got one the other night, and I came into the game today full of confidence, and I think it showed.”

The victory, which ends a run of 13 winless Premier League games for the Toffees, takes the Blues’ points total to 29 - which would be 35 but for the deduction handed down earlier in the season.

Calvert-Lewin says an improved second-half display, along with the “extra man” of the Goodison support, aided Everton in their efforts to secure an important win.

“It’s a massive result," he admitted. "A must-win in many ways, but to take the three points today and put in a performance like that - I think in the first half, we were happy to come in 1-0, but we knew we could improve, and I thought we did that in the second half. A great win.

“We had to stay switched on, stay concentrated, and I think we did. The lads put in a great, great shift.

“It was the Goodison I love and the Goodison I know. When the fans get behind us like that, it’s a cliché, but it’s an extra man.”

Eager to continue a positive run, Calvert-Lewin says the squad will be out to avoid complacency, aiming for another strong performance in Everton's next game – an evening encounter at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on Monday 15 April (8pm kick-off).

He added: “We’ll be going into the next game and looking to win that as well, and just keep extending that gap, and focus on what we can control.”
