DCL On Building Belief From Tyneside Goal

Dominic Calvert-Lewin believes Everton can build momentum from Tuesday’s result at St. James' Park – and insists his crucial equaliser can provide a platform to "open the tap" in front of goal.

The Blues striker netted an 88th-minute penalty to level the game at 1-1 after Newcastle had taken an early lead through Alexander Isak.

Calvert-Lewin was a part of a triple change on the hour-mark, helping the Toffees to turn the game around, with Dyche also sending on Andre Gomes and James Garner.

The late leveller gives confidence for upcoming matches, insisted Calvert-Lewin, who told evertontv: “To take the point away from home, but also, to get on the scoresheet for myself – I think everyone knows how much that meant to me.

“It’s been a while since I’ve scored, and as a centre-forward, your main job is to score goals. That can play on your mind after a while. You just have to keep staying confident, and working hard on the training pitch, and believing it will come.

“Today, it’s come for me, so I’ve got no doubt that the tap is open now, and I’m going to start scoring more goals."

The improved second-half showing was cheered on by the travelling Everton support, with 3,144 Toffees making the long trip to Tyneside for the midweek match.

Blues’ goalscorer Calvert-Lewin was keen to thank the Evertonians for the role they played in the well-earned result.

“The away fans are top,” he said. “I’ve scored a few at this stadium now, so I know exactly where they are and what that noise sounds like. To see them – limbs flying everywhere – when you look up, so late on in the game.

“I hope everyone is happy who travelled today to see me hit the back of the net and know how much it means to me and how much it means to them.

“I once dreamed of being Everton’s No.9 and now I’m here, leading the line, so I accept that responsibility, and know what comes with the job.”

A big game against Burnley is up next for the Blues, who welcome the Clarets on Saturday for a 3pm (BST) kick-off.

Calvert-Lewin thinks the belief from Tuesday’s result, along with the way in which his side earned it, can be carried over into the weekend.

“We have to take confidence and momentum from this into Saturday,” he added.

“We’re ready for it. Recovery now and a couple of training sessions, and we’ll be ready to go. We have to lift it now. I think we saw in the second half, when we spend a little more time on the ball, and particularly in Newcastle’s half, we are effective.

“We’ve not been doing that enough. I think it leads to more chance creation; more chances for myself, and more opportunity. I think if we can do that more, then we won’t go far wrong.”
