Wheeler On Battling Blues Point

Clare Wheeler labelled Sunday’s Merseyside derby a "fight" as Everton picked up a point against an in-form Liverpool side.

The Toffees impressed the most at Goodison Park but weren’t able to find the cutting edge to secure a league double over their local rivals. While disappointed with the point, Wheeler was proud of her teammates for keeping the visitors at bay.

“We obviously wanted the three points, but we definitely didn’t want to lose it,” she told evertontv.

“Everyone put a shift in. It was a transitional kind of game, a lot of metres covered by everyone.

“Credit to both teams, no one could find a way to win this one today.

“If you want to sum up the game in one word, you’d use the word fight. We had a couple of players going down, they had a couple of players going down, there was about 15 minutes of extra time played.

“It was a physical game but it’s a derby. That’s what you want, it’s going to be a fight, it’s going to be tussle. Credit to both teams, it was tough.”

Evertonians came in their thousands to support Brian Sorensen’s side for Sunday’s match.

Wheeler was delighted to see so many fans in attendance and promised Sunday’s point would be a foundation for a strong finish to the Women’s Super League season.

“It’s great to be able to play in front of more numbers here today and to have the crowd that turned out,” she added.

“It’s unfortunate we couldn’t come away with the win for them, but it just shows that the community is behind us. I love it here. I do love Everton. I really like the culture and what Everton stands for and I just hope that comes out in the way I play.

“We want to finish the season strong and that’s our aim going forward.”
