Onana's Rallying Call After Palace Point

Amadou Onana says he has “mixed feelings” after scoring a late equaliser in Everton’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday evening.

Only Arsenal (11) have netted more goals from corners than the Toffees (10) in the Premier League this season, and Everton again proved to be a threat from set pieces.

The Belgian arrived onto the field at Goodison Park as a second-half substitute, and, after just 18 minutes of his introduction, he made a vital impact, powering home Dwight McNeil’s corner with a towering header in the 84th minute.

The goal pulled the Blues level, after they had fallen behind from Jordan Ayew’s stunning effort from outside the penalty area.

Asked how he felt after the game, Onana responded: “I’d say mixed feelings because if you see all the chances we had, we could have won the game, but we’re still happy with the point.

“We controlled the game; controlled the pace of the game, and had more possession, and more chances. I think we maybe should have won the game, but I’m still happy.”

The midfielder’s verdict on Everton’s dominance is backed by the post-match stats.

The Blues registered 19 shots to Palace’s 10, while also recording 62 per cent possession.

Both sides had four shots on target, with all of the Toffees’ efforts coming in an improved second-half display – a 45 minutes in which Onana had the crucial involvement.

It was his third Premier League goal of the season, and all three have been headers from corners. Onana says it’s an area he’s been trying to improve, explaining: “I feel like – in the most humble way – I should be scoring more from set pieces. This is something I’ve been working on, so it’s nice when you see your work pay.

“Any chance I get on the football pitch, I just try to be the one to make a difference. Especially, when you come off the bench. I want to change the rhythm of the game, change the flow of the game, and I think I did that well tonight.”

The result lifts Everton out of the bottom three, and Onana, despite being disappointed his side couldn’t find the win, reassures the point is a positive for Everton.

"It’s definitely a step in the right direction,” he added. “I feel like we had a very good month in December.

“We showed we were able to win games against big opponents, and we keep building. It’s part of the process, so we keep being patient and keep pushing.”
