Phil Jagielka believes defender Jarrad Branthwaite's future to be bright and sees similarities to one of his old teammates, John Stones.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Everton centre-half applauded Branthwaite's attributes and feels he is better than Stones was at a similar age.

“We always knew John [Stones] was going to be a footballing centre-half," he said. “Branthwaite is good on the ball, but he’s a bit more commanding. He’s in a good place, as John was.

“He’s in a team that suits him, playing every week and developing as a defender. That will give him a platform, which will hopefully be at Everton, but if not the potential there is massive.”

Branthwaite - who won the European Championships with England Under-21s in the summer - is yet to receive a senior call-up to Gareth Southgate's side.

However, former England international and Blues forward, Gary Lineker feels his performances this season could see him included in England's EUROs squad this summer.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said: "Possibly a central defender. Branthwaite maybe, if he finishes the season really strongly. There is a possibility in that particular position."
