Young Loving Life In Royal Blue

Ashley Young revealed he's thoroughly enjoying life as an Everton player as he admitted the competition for places is driving high standards throughout the squad.

The defender netted his maiden goal for the Club on Wednesday night to seal a fine team display and a 3-0 victory over Burnley that sets up a Carabao Cup quarter-final with Fulham next month.

Young's effort came after some fantastic attacking play from substitute Beto, who outmuscled Burnley defender Ameen Al-Dakhi before driving with the ball into the penalty area and fizzing it across the goalmouth for Young to prod home.

Reflecting on the victory with evertontv, Young, who has settled well into life as a Blue, praised the quality he's seen from his Everton teammates so far with the fine work from Beto coming off the bench an example of the strength in depth throughout this current Everton squad.

"I'm really enjoying it here," said Young on his time with the Club. "When you are winning games and playing in the team, it's all you can ask for. I hope it can continue.

"The competition keeps everyone on their toes. Not just in a game but in training, week in week out, and day in day out.

"You have to make sure you're giving 100 per cent in training, in the right way. If you are not, someone else will come and take your position, so it's healthy competition and a really good squad."

The victory saw Everton extend their impressive recent run to five wins from their past seven matches.

It was also a third clean sheet in four outings, which as a defender, is a great source of pride for Young.

"As a back four and back five with Picks (Jordan Pickford), we want to get clean sheets," he explained.

"That gives the boys further up the pitch opportunities to go and get on the scoresheet. The work the likes of Dwight and Jack get through is phenomenal, it's brilliant for us and they do it for the team week in and week out. As long as they keep doing it with us as a back line, then we can hopefully get more clean sheets."

Attention now switches back to the Premier League as the Blues welcome Brighton to Goodison Park this Saturday (3pm GMT).

The Seagulls have been an impressive and consistent outfit under manager Roberto De Zerbi and it's set to be another tough contest for Sean Dyche's men.

Young, though, is confident the Toffees can continue their good recent form and pick up another big positive result.

"It's important we recover after being on the road this past weekend. We dust ourselves down and recover. We know it's going to be another tough test but I am fully confident in the team and squad that we have got. Whatever team goes out on Saturday, we will be ready and fully prepared."
