Tarkowski's Defiant Cup Message

James Tarkowski says he is "desperate" to go far in this year's Carabao Cup competition after helping Everton secure a place in the quarter-finals of the competition with a 3-0 win over Burnley.

Two former Clarets players combined for the Blues' opener, as Tarkowski powerfully headed home Dwight McNeil's cross on 13 minutes.

Amadou Onana prodded home Everton's second of the night - from Tarkowski's knock-down - eight minutes after the half-time interval, before Ashley Young netted his maiden goal for the Club in stoppage-time following fantastic centre-forward play from Beto.

"It went well, getting a goal, an assist and a nice, solid performance - it was workmanlike, with every man doing their jobs," said Tarkowski. "We created plenty of good chances and scored three goals, so it was a good night for us.

"It's always ideal to score early and thankfully we did that. The way they play, they like to open you up and they did a couple of times, to be fair to them, but we made it hard for them to break us down and hit them with our own attacks."

Discussing his goal and assist, the centre-back continued: "It seems like the only way I can score [is getting on the end of a cross from McNeil]! It was a great ball from Dwight, then I just tried to keep myself free and make a good contact on it. Thankfully it went in.

"Then, [for the assist], we put a lot of value on our set pieces. We're a big, powerful side and we feel like if we get the delivery right and our movement right, then we can cause any team a problem. You saw that tonight."

Everton now face Fulham at Goodison Park in the last eight of the competition, knowing they are potentially just 270 minutes away from a trip to Wembley.

"I'm desperate to go far in a cup competition," said Tarkowski, ahead of the quarter-final draw. "I've never been as far as I would have liked in a cup competition, so hopefully this year is the one.

"We're waiting for the draw and we're ready to go against whoever we get next."

For now, attentions switch back to the Premier League, with the Toffees set to host Brighton & Hove Albion at Goodison Park on Saturday, having registered back-to-back 3-0 wins on home soil.

"The manager reminded us afterwards that's five wins in our past seven games and with the games we've had, to pick up five wins is really good work," added Tarkowski. "But it's always about consistency, which we've lacked since I've been here, so it's really important for us to keep building on this momentum that we've started to build.

"We want to put more good performances together and keep picking up good results from here."
