DCL's Improvement Message Ahead Of Cup Test

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has praised the discipline shown by his Everton teammates in Sunday's win but believes being more clinical is the key to making such wins more comfortable.

Thanks to a resolute defensive display, Everton sealed a 1-0 win in East London and became the first side in 2023 to stop West Ham from scoring at home in a Premier League contest.

Calvert-Lewin's superb second-half strike settled Sunday's contest and saw Everton's No.9 reach the milestone of 50 Premier League goals for the Blues.

Understandably, he received a large portion of the post-match plaudits, however, the Everton striker was keen to put the focus on the resolute defensive display of his teammates playing deeper on the pitch.

"I think the manner in which we won was impressive," he explained to evertonfc.com. "We didn't create loads of quality chances, we did create chances in the second half but the way in which we defended, the discipline that we showed, the back line were magnificent and the two midfielders in the engine room were good.

"So to a man, I thought we performed well and to build on from that."

Up next for the Toffees is the Carabao Cup clash against Burnley on Wednesday night (7.45pm GMT).

Looking ahead to that test, Calvert-Lewin outlined why he believes it's important for Everton to continue showing a more ruthless edge in the final third.

"Sunday was typical in the way we have performed this season and to come away with the three points is the most important thing," he said. "It's cliché but it is, and it's nice to do that while also putting in the performance as well.

"But I also think we need to take our other chances to make it more comfortable for ourselves."

It is set to be an emotionally-charged night on Wednesday as Everton return to Goodison Park for the first time since the passing of the late Chairman Bill Kenwright CBE.

With Wednesday in mind, Calvert-Lewin was keen to pay tribute to the late Chairman and explained they had a relationship that went beyond just a working one.

"Throughout my career, he always messaged me when I hit certain milestones," he revealed. "When I got in the England team and in other certain games that meant a lot to the Club. I'd always have a message from Bill.

"It was always a proud moment to get a message from the Chairman with well wishes, and that wasn't just me, it was the rest of the lads he used to do that with. He had a good personal relationship with a lot of the lads.

"He gave me the opportunity to play for Everton Football Club. He wasn't just the Chairman, he was a great man and I would say, a friend."
